Over the weekend of October 24th, child advocates from across the state came together virtually to learn, debate and vote on WSPTA’s legislative priorities for 2020-2021 year and will focus its advocacy efforts on the following during the upcoming 2021 legislative session: Top 5 Legislative Priorities:
- Increase Access to Nursing, Mental Health and Social Emotional Learning Staff
- Support Students and Preserve Education Funding
- Increasing Educational Equity by Closing the Digital Divide
- Supports and Funding for Students with Disabilities
- Prevent and Reduce Gun Violence and Suicide
The 2021-2021 WSPTA Supported Issues include:
- Equitable Identification and Services for Highly Capable Students
- Mitigating the Adverse Impacts of Climate Change
- Safe School Plans and Emergency Preparedness
Delegates also voted on a new Long-term Legislative Principle (“anti-racism, anti-discrimination, anti-oppression”) and added eight new Resolutions to the platform, allowing PTAs to support the following and advocate at the school, district, city and state levels: • Cultural Access Programs and Expanded Learning Opportunities • School Nutrition, Breakfast and Lunch Policies • Equitable Access to Recess, Play, Unstructured Time and Physical Activity • Social Emotional Learning and Student Success • Restorative Justice and Improving Student Outcomes • Dismantling Institutional and Systemic Racism • Improving Access and Outcome in Special Education • Supporting K-12 Career and Technical Education • Mitigating the Health Effects of Climate Change amendment There is a lot of work ahead to ensure that every child reaches their potential.
